How it works

Eligible dividends usually come from Canadian public corporations. They get a 38% gross-up and a larger dividend tax credit.

Non-eligible dividends usually come from CCPCs (small businesses). They get a 15% gross-up and a smaller credit.

The dividend tax credit offsets the gross-up, accounting for tax the corporation has already paid.
